We believe that real change happens in real time and that authentic change happens through trust.

Drawing from the collective strength of a global grassroots coalition, we tackle the world's biggest challenges while upholding and asserting the right to self-determination. Our approach is rooted in collaboration and trust, recognizing that those who live in the everyday realities are the real experts on any issue. In all we do, we strive to break down the divide between indigenous and non-indigenous and bring home the reality that  whether in remote forest or urban center  we are all interconnected.

DIRECT GRASSROOTS SUPPORT

We provide direct support, bolster capacity of grassroots organizations, and offer technical assistance   guided by communities for communities. Whether it's demarcation of territories or equipping local youth through advocacy trainings, we support partners to achieve their self-determined strategic priorities. This often involves expanding access to financial resources (by serving as a fiscal sponsor or deploying unrestricted funding), advising on strategy, and assisting in coordination on the ground.

LINKING PARTNERS IN SOLIDARITY

We find strength in numbers by fostering solidarity among indigenous groups and establishing common ground with non-indigenous allies. Over the last two decades, we have seen the power in bringing different groups together around the same table — to dine, to meet, to exchange ideas, and to rally around commonalities. We forge these links by putting partners in communication across countries and regions, hosting or supporting conferences and convenings, facilitating new partnerships among organizations, and serving as a third-party mediator when needed.

INFLUENCING POLICY DECISIONS

We make sure indigenous peoples are aware of relevant international mechanisms and have a seat at the table on policies that affect local realities. While the frameworks and agreements drafted to help promote and protect the rights of indigenous peoples are created with best intentions, they often represent a top-down approach and a western way of thinking. To ensure that our partners can fully utilize these tools, Land is Life supports the participation of indigenous delegates at key forums, promotes dialogue with development institutions, and equips first-time participants for navigating the international policymaking landscape.
