Advocacy, Campaigns, and Strategic Engagement

Land is Life strengthens the voices of Indigenous Peoples by supporting their engagement in national, regional and international decision-making processes concerning development, climate change, biodiversity conservation and human rights, and we work directly with communities under threat by: organizing campaigns at the local, national and international levels; engaging with regional and international human rights bodies; and mobilizing support from the United Nations human rights  mechanisms, donor countries and the general public to ensure that they are protected from violations against their individual and collective rights.

The program focuses on:

  • We work closely with Indigenous Peoples’ communities under threat as they seek redress and try to hold perpetrators accountable for human rights violations. We monitor and document human rights violations; submit reports and statements to regional and United Nations human rights bodies; carry out campaigns with Indigenous Peoples to find remedy for human rights crises; engage bilateral and multilateral donors to promote States’ adherence to international standards of human rights and to improve human rights laws and policies; and actively support the effective participation of Indigenous Peoples in regional and international human rights bodies, including:

    - United Nations Human Rights Treaty Bodies
    - The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)
    - The United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP)
    - The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
    - The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights
    - United Nations Universal Periodic Review
    - The United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights

  • Given the vital role that Indigenous Peoples play in addressing the world’s major challenges - sustainable development, safeguarding biological diversity, adapting to - and mitigating the effects of - global climate change, advancing global food security, and conflict resolution and peace building - it is essential that they have a voice in international policy-making processes. We support the effective participation of Indigenous Peoples in regional and international fora, including:

    - The United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF)
    - Processes and meetings of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
    - Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization
    - African Union
    - Organization of American States
    - International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
    - Committee on World Food Security

Our Advocacy, Campaigns, and Strategic Engagement program contributes to:

1.

Strengthening political advocacy on behalf of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Defenders and the individual and collective rights of Indigenous Peoples, including halting forced evictions from their ancestral homelands.

2.

Protecting Indigenous Peoples’ rights to territory, land, and resources and their livelihoods from fortress conservation programs and exploitation by extractive industries; while reinforcing their self-determined development.

3.

Ensuring that climate change adaptation and mitigation programs are carried out in a way that recognizes the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
