Indigenous Women’s Program

Land is Life’s Indigenous Women’s Program supports Indigenous women in the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, prioritizing organizations and communities that have little or no access to funding and other support.

The Program provides comprehensive support to Indigenous women by building the capacity and sustainability of Indigenous women’s organizations; strengthening the effective and meaningful participation of Indigenous women in international fora and policy-making processes concerning land and resource rights, global climate change, environment, human rights, and development; facilitating platforms for Indigenous women that allow them to share and exchange experiences and create collaborative efforts to defend and advocate for their rights and well-being; empowering Indigenous women economically, socially and politically; and fostering the next generation of Indigenous women leaders.

The Program provides:

  • Direct Support to Indigenous Women-led Grassroots Organizations:

Directly supporting the work of women-led Indigenous organizations by providing core funding, technical and fundraising support, and capacity building.

  • Medical, psychological and spiritual assistance:

Funding for medical, psychological and spiritual assistance/protection from Western doctors as well as traditional healers for Indigenous Peoples’ right defenders who have been harmed or are being threatened as a result of their human rights activities.

  • Strengthening Regional and International Networks:

Coordinating regional and international meetings of Indigenous women; supporting regional and international networks.

  • Indigenous Women’s Fellowship

Our Fellowship is helping to nurture the next generation of Indigenous women leaders by supporting Indigenous women who are taking innovative actions that contribute to gender equality, the well-being of their communities, and the recognition of their land and resource rights. This year, five fellowships have been awarded. Each fellow is committed to: 1) carrying out a community project, 2) developing and supporting local and regional networks, 3) building capacity in their communities to advance the rights of Indigenous women and girls. Fellows receive a monthly stipend, funding for their community project, capacity building, and administrative support to ensure the success of their work
