Indigenous Peoples of North America

There are approximately between 6 and 8 million Indigenous persons living in North America, belonging to nearly 1,200 distinct Peoples. Indigenous Peoples live across Canada and The United States, with a majority living in urban areas.

Challenges

Indigenous Peoples in North America are threatened by resource extraction industries, inadequate protection of sacred sites, violence against Indigenous women and girls, and efforts by federal and local governments to erode their rights and self-determination.
